GIULIANO, UN CLASSICO DA RISCOPRIRE di Domenico De Masi [POST-FAZIONE – Origine n.10]

Quando Vidal ha scritto Giuliano aveva più o meno la stessa età dell’imperatore al momento in cui fu ammazzato a tradimento. Mi sono sempre chiesto (ma perché non l’ho chiesto direttamente all’autore ?) cosa possa avere spinto un trentenne borghese di Washington a interessarsi con tanta acuta tenacia di un trentenne imperatore romano, e neppure dei più noti.
Vidal ha una vocazione geniale a trasformare la realtà storica in immagini (cioè a creare opere d’arte, come spiegherebbe Benedetto Croce), investigando con gli strumenti della psicologia moderna le pieghe più nascoste dell’anima dei potenti, antichi e prossimi, fino a scovarvi le prove che gli consentono di dimostrare, attraverso la letteratura, le proprie tesi sul corso della storia. Così ha fatto con le guerre di Dario e con Pearl Arbor, così ha fatto con Lincoln e con Roosvelt. E così ha fatto con Giuliano.
Dei quattro romanzi più fortunati che narrano vite di imperatori romani (Le memorie di Adriano della Yourcenr, Io, Claudio e Il divo Claudio di Graves, Giuliano di Vidal) questo è di gran lunga il più “colto”, il più ricco di riferimenti a luoghi e fatti precisi, quello che si muove più disinvoltamente tra le figure che si affollarono intorno a Giuliano e nei luoghi innumerevoli in cui, da pagano errante, egli fu spedito o si spedì. Nicomedia, Costantinopoli, Macellum, Pergamo, Efeso, Atene (“dove anche i vetturali conoscono Omero”), Milano, Como, Torino, Vienne, Autun, Reims, Colonia, Parigi, Sirmio, Eraclea, Antiochia, Tarso, senza contare le tante località minori e le città conquistate nella fatale spedizione persiana.
Manca Roma perché Giuliano, imperatore romano e visionario cultore del genio di Roma, mai a Roma volle mettere piede, restando, in tutta la sua breve esistenza, sempre e solo asiatico per istinto, greco per cultura, universale per intenzione di conquiste. Del resto, la stessa nomina ad augusto gli venne non dai romani, secondo il costume romano, ma dai barbari, secondo i loro rituali.

Ma perché Gore Vidal ha dedicato proprio a questo imperatore secondario un’opera così imponente? Per trenta dei suoi trentadue anni, Giuliano visse una condizione due volte mortale: come uomo e come condannato a morte. E’ questa estrema condizione umana doppiamente precaria che ha indotto Vidal a privilegiarlo dedicandogli cinque anni di studio e un capolavoro letterario?
Quando Giuliano era ancora bambino, lo zio Costanzo gli ammazzò il padre per usurparne il trono e rinviò ad un secondo momento l’esecuzione sua e del fratellastro Gallo. Dunque, fino alla morte dello zio, per tre decenni, Giuliano è vissuto come in un braccio della morte, in attesa di un’esecuzione che poteva sopraggiungere da un momento all’altro. Una mossa sbagliata, una parola di troppo, la fugace prevalenza di cortigiani avversi, una minima fobìa di Costanzo sarebbero bastate per muovere la mano del boia e chiudere la partita.
Giuliano condivide questa situazione paradossale con il suo fratellastro, molto più avvenente di lui, parimenti ambizioso, ma assai meno intelligente e mostruosamente bestiale sia per istinto che per ignoranza. Gallo diventerà imperatore d’Oriente grazie alla sua irruenza primitiva, cadrà in disgrazia a causa della sua smodata trivialità, finirà decapitato per alto tradimento. Giuliano è di tutt’altra pasta: aggraziato, letterato, lucidamente sottile, diventerà imperatore d’Oriente e d’Occidente esercitando la sua ben coltivata prudenza, ma cadrà tuttavia in disgrazia per la sua religiosità monomaniacale e resterà vittima della sua apostasia, sprecando la grande occasione di riunire un impero imponente, che andava sgretolandosi.
Per quanto diversi fossero i due giovani e nobili morituri, per quanto mostruoso fosse Gallo e ammirevole Giuliano, tuttavia il nostro eroe quasi morbosamente subiva il fascino sinistro del fratellastro. “Eravamo come due animali potenzialmente ostili, chiusi nella stessa gabbia” dirà Giuliano, con una metafora assai simile a quella che gli verrà in mente più tardi, quando la moglie Elena lo lascerà vedovo e lo consegnerà ad una volontaria castità: “Eravamo due bestie imperiali attaccate al giogo di uno stesso padrone per tirare un carro dorato”.
Condannato ad essere un problema politico fin dalla nascita, costretto a farsi sgobbone e chierico pur di sopravvivere, messo involontariamente al centro di infinite trame, Giuliano opterà per una trasparente integrità morale e ribalterà l’estrema incertezza della propria esistenza in ossessione per l’immortalità.
E’ tutto questo che ha conquistato l’immaginazione di Gore Vidal costringendolo a cimentarsi con una figura tuttavia marginale nell’epopea greco-romana?

La struttura che Vidal impone al proprio romanzo è allo stesso tempo lieve e grandiosa, come quella di un tempio classico. Diciassette anni dopo la morte di Giuliano, il vecchio Libanio, un filosofo pagano che fu insegnante e intimo dello sfortunato imperatore, e che tuttora lo venera, decide di riabilitarne la memoria scrivendone, senza peli sulla lingua, una biografia così ben documentata da confutare una volta per sempre le infamanti falsità diffuse dai cristiani contro di lui.
Libanio intende dimostrare che la lotta di Giuliano contro il cristianesimo era giusta e che sarebbe riuscita vittoriosa se i cristiani non avessero congiurato contro l’imperatore uccidendolo a tradimento. Le prove sono in mano a Prisco, anch’egli pagano, vecchio compagno-filosofo dell’imperatore, che, alla morte di questi, era riuscito a trafugarne i diari e le memorie, scritte da Giuliano durante gli ultimi quattro mesi di vita, forse premonendo la sua tragica fine.
Il romanzo racconta lo scambio epistolare di documenti tra Libanio e Prisco, ormai vecchi brontoloni che non hanno più nulla da perdere, e consente così la lettura delle preziose memorie imperiali, commentate in controcanto dalle osservazioni affettuosamente sarcastiche dei due filosofi.
Ecco forse una chiave che spiega come mai Gore Vidal si sia imbarcato nell’eccentrica avventura storico-letteraria di ricostruire minuziosamente la vita di un augusto minore. Forse questo capolavoro è nato per la gioia esaltante, consentita ai grandi scrittori, di vincere la sfida sottesa a ogni romanzo storico: intrecciare fantasia e realtà senza che l’una prevarichi l’altra, fino a scolpire un ritratto psicologico così vivo da diventare più autentico di quello che fu reale.
Nel nostro caso la sfida è resa ancora più ardua da una duplice circostanza: sulle vicende di Giuliano esistono documenti assai meno numerosi e meno attendibili che non sulla vita di altri più celebri imperatori; allo stesso tempo, però, la storia di Giuliano è estremamente complessa, essendo egli, allo stesso tempo, filosofo, politico, condottiero, scrittore e sacerdote, mosso in misura incandescente dal duplice bisogno di sopravvivere lui stesso e di far sopravvivere la civiltà ellenica, minacciata all’esterno da barbari e all’interno dai cristiani. I primi soccomberanno sotto la sua genialità di stratega; i secondi lo abbatteranno profittando della sua ingenuità di fanatico.
Gore Vidal, dunque, potrebbe essere stato conquistato dalla doppia sfida di riempire con l’immaginazione i vuoti della documentazione e, allo stesso tempo, di esplorare la personalità obliqua dell’imperatore, dei suoi contemporanei e dei suoi tempi esibendo dosi parimenti sorprendenti sia di saggezza che di ironia: di doti, cioè, che generalmente suppongono una maturità assai più solida di quella che siamo predisposti a trovare in uno scrittore di trent’anni.
Si rifletta non solo sulla squisitezza letteraria ma anche sulla maturità riflessiva e sull’acume psicologico di queste schegge che hanno già tutta la forza di aforismi: “Gallo era felice ogni volta che la sua sete di violenza coincideva con quel che altri consideravano giustizia”. “Gli dei che noi adoriamo non sono mai stati uomini, sono piuttosto qualità e forze che la nostra sapienza ha trasformato in poesia”. “La follia degli intellettuali è sempre più perniciosa di quella degli idioti”. “La sua diffidenza era aggravata dal fatto che era un po’ meno intelligente delle persone con cui doveva trattare”. “La retorica dell’odio è molto più efficace quando si esprime nell’idioma dell’amore”. “In fondo al cuore siamo tutti così semplici che finiamo col diventare incomprensibili”. “Come sono strani gli uomini! Se non possono essere i primi, non si dolgono affatto di essere gli ultimi”. “Per fortuna, quando la maggioranza vede storto, non ci si fa più caso e si giudica anormale solo la visione perfetta delle cose”. “Siamo giocattoli. Un lattante divino ci prende e ci lascia e quando gli viene il capriccio ci rompe”. “La storia è un pettegolezzo vano a proposito di avvenimenti che smettono di essere veri nel momento in cui succedono”. “Gli uomini hanno sempre amato distruggere quanto costruire. Questo spiega perché la guerra è tanto popolare”.
E si apprezzi l’ironia (diventa ormai proverbiale) di Gore Vidal in queste osservazioni fulminanti: “I nostri concittadini si possono comprare a buon prezzo, ma son troppo frivoli per restare fedeli all’acquirente”. “Il vescovo aveva il dono di spiegare solo le cose che si sanno già, lasciando immerse nel mistero quelle che si vorrebbero sapere”. “Hai mai notato che quando un medico ci ordina questa o quella cura e la seguiamo e si guarisce, ha sempre un’aria vagamente sorpresa?”. “Ai medici piace vedere gli uomini spegnersi ordinatamente e irreversibilmente”. “Godeva fama di essere stupido, e non ho motivo di contraddire un’opinione tanto diffusa”. “Hai un talento straordinario, cesare, per rendere impossibile ciò che è difficile”.
Per quanto impietose, queste affermazioni non sono imparentate con l’ironia di un Voltaire, non trasudano aromi salottieri: sembrano scolpite nel marmo come si addice al pensiero classico distillato dalla filosofia greca.

Ma perché Gore Vidal ha dedicato cinque anni della sua giovinezza e una parte notevole della sua genialità artistica a questa figura comunque secondaria del panteon classico? Arriva ad accreditarlo persino come migliore di Marco Aurelio, che reputa sovrastimato dai posteri. Lo preferisce ad Adriano, che non perde l’occasione di ridicolizzare per il suo straripante amore nei confronti di Antinoo. Lo paragona e persino lo antepone ad Alessandro per originalità strategica e meditata temerarietà. Gli contrappone simmetricamente la figura di Gallo per costruirgli un lato oscuro che ne metta in ulteriore risalto lo splendore. Perché tanta generosità verso un cesare augusto minore?
Il Giuliano che Vidal tenta a tutti i costi di farci amare, in parte riuscendoci, è un giovane intellettualmente precoce, disinteressato al denaro, avido di libri, costituzionalmente incline alla filosofia, parimenti capace di capire gli uomini e manovrare gli eserciti. Ma è anche un giovane puerilmente schiavo dei presagi e dei maghi, di intelligenza acutissima ma rivolta al passato assai più che al futuro, patologicamente affetto da una inguaribile monomania: riconquistare all’ellenismo, sottraendole alla chiesa, tutte le masse degli ancora indecisi; difendere il culto degli dei pagani dall’invadenza della teologia cristiana, scaltra debitrice a Mitra e all’Olimpo di tutti i suoi dogmi e le sue credenze; salvare la perfezione estetica e filosofica del mondo classico dalla rozza minaccia della supponenza ecclesiastica che, a suo parere, non aveva ancora vinto la partita proprio a causa dell’accanimento con cui traduceva le controversie dottrinali in massacri degli “empi” e persino degli stessi fedeli. “Nulla al mondo eguaglia la ferocia di un vescovo a caccia di eresie”.
A questa sua monomania, il Giuliano descritto da Vidal immolerà migliaia di vite umane e la sua stessa giovane esistenza, tendendo fino allo spasimo la corda della sua vita, senza mai rendersi conto che la propria stella brillava sulla fine di un mondo, mentre la stella di Adriano e quella di Alessandro avevano brillato su due mondi allo zenit.
Giuliano pretende di ringiovanire un sistema invecchiato, di trasformare l’inverno in primavera, di liberare l’Olimpo ellenico dalla marea montante dalla religione cristiana. Follemente si imbarca nella tentata conquista della Persia, e vagheggia quella dell’India e della Cina, per eguagliare e superare Alessandro, per conquistarsi un arco di trionfo nel foro di Roma, per sancire definitivamente il trionfo delle religioni elleniche su quella cristiana, per portare la verità dei “suoi” dei fino agli estremi confini dell’Oriente barbaro. E perché la Persia è la terra santa del suo Mitra e del suo Zarathustra.
Ma forse, alla fine dei conti, Giuliano era nient’altro che un conservatore che ha vagheggiato per tutta la vita l’impossibile ritorno a “un mondo magnifico e perduto nel quale gli dei, non perseguitati, vivevano in mezzo a noi, e la terra era semplice e gli uomini buoni”. Gore Vidal sa bene che questa perduta età dell’oro, più affine alla semplicità contadina di Esiodo che non alla complessità epica di Omero o a quella filosofica di Platone, non è mai esistita. Perché, dunque, concedere tanta importanza a un lontano imperatore che follemente l’ha inseguita?

Giuliano è un libro cupo, funestato nella prima metà dalla incombente condanna a morte di Giuliano e nella seconda metà dalla ineludibile predestinazione del nostro eroe a un sacrificio precoce.
Della incombente esecuzione vi sono mille continui segnali; del pessimo futuro vi sono mille continui presagi. E la solida preparazione filosofica, che ha conferito a Giuliano la scaltrezza necessaria per scampare all’esecuzione, non basta per assicurargli la prudenza necessaria a salvarlo dalle congiure. Né basta per dargli l’unità di misura necessaria a comprendere che i riti pagani non erano meno illusori di quelli cristiani.
Perché mai la medesima sapienza filosofica basta a Prisco per restare laico e non basta a Giuliano per diventarlo? Come mai Prisco è così saggio da accontentarsi del suo ruolo di filosofo, guadagnandosi la longevità, mentre Giuliano è così saggio da capire che la saggezza non è tutto? Ma, in fondo, “chi può sapere da quale porta entrerà la saggezza?”. E quale saggezza?
Forse sono stati questi dubbi umanissimi, e il desiderio di fugarli, che hanno spinto Gore Vidal a ricostruire minuziosamente l’avventura terrena di Giuliano, nella speranza che la storia di un uomo potesse decifrare il mistero di tutte le altre umane avventure.
E quando Libanio esclama: “E’ una commedia, Prisco, è una tragedia!” il lettore ha l’impressione che Vidal lo abbia prodigiosamente condotto sul punto di attingere il segreto della nostra esistenza, così come Massimo condusse Giuliano negli estremi vortici luminosi dell’iniziazione ai misteri.

E qui, nella mente del lettore, si fa strada un’ipotesi. Ma siamo sicuri che Giuliano sia stato un augusto minore? Siamo sicuri che Gore Vidal abbia capricciosamente dedicato un capolavoro a una stella secondaria della galassia imperiale?
Come condottiero, Giuliano ottenne la più grande vittoria degli eserciti romani in Gallia dopo Giulio Cesare. Come governatore fu clemente, giusto e inflessibile. Come uomo fu affascinante. Come scrittore fu brillante. Come amante fu tenero. Come marito fu fedele. Come conquistatore arrivò da Parigi a Cresifonte. A 32 anni realizzò imprese che Traiano, universalmente elogiato come il massimo stratega romano, non riuscì a compiere nel doppio degli anni. Fu imperatore di Roma e signore del mondo.
Giuliano era consapevole della umana finitezza, anche quando un uomo è imperatore. Perciò si mantenne sobrio, discreto, generoso, autentico, esplicito, autocritico per tutta la vita. Certo, era anche vanitoso, ma non pretendeva mai più di quanto gli spettasse. Aveva troppa fretta di imporre al mondo le proprie idee religiose, ma aveva studiato trent’anni per approfondirle e per convincersi che esse erano le più adatte a farsi carico dell’umana felicità.
Ma, allora, perché generalmente si ritiene che Giuliano sia meno grande di Cesare e di Augusto, di Adriano e di Marco Aurelio? Perché nei nostri libri di storia la sua epopea viene liquidata in pochi righi e il suo nome resta inscindibilmente legato al marchio infamante di “apostata”? e cosa significa, in fondo, quella parola “apostata” che tutti, anche i laici, continuano a ripetere acriticamente??
Il 4 febbraio del 362 l’imperatore Giuliano Augusto ribaltò l’editto con cui Costantino aveva privilegiato la religione cristiana e, coraggiosamente, coerentemente, proclamò la libertà di culto in tutto il mondo, ripristinando l’eclettismo di Roma, che mai aveva tentato di imporre un credo unico ai popoli conquistati, ritenendo giusto che la varietà degli dei rispecchiasse la varietà della natura e delle genti. Giuliano Augusto si batté con tutte le forze contro Gesù considerandolo un semplice rabbino riformatore, un ribelle che tentava di farsi eleggere re e che per questo fu giustiziato. Con pari veemenza e coerenza Giuliano Augusto combatté i cristiani che, ai suoi occhi bene informati, apparivano nevrotizzati dall’idea della morte, rinunciatari, crudeli, colpevoli di saccheggiare con pari voracità sia i riti ellenici per farne feste cristiane, sia i templi pagani per farne chiese ed ossari.
Nella mente di Giuliano, esercitata per anni agli studi filosofici, appariva inaccettabile che mille generazioni di uomini, fra i quali Omero e Platone, avessero potuto sbagliare tutto in materia di religione, mentre una manciata di semplici pescatori della Galilea fosse arrivata a capire tutto, in un batter d’occhio, privilegiata da una rivelazione immeritata.
“Visti oggi, a distanza di tempo, i suoi atti sono quelli di un pazzo” ammette Prisco. Ma si trattò comunque di una pazzia che, come quella di Amleto, possedeva un metodo, era guidata da una strategia e, armata di eserciti e di poteri, rischiava persino di riuscire vincente. Perciò un giavellotto romano, vibrato dalle mani di un congiurato cristiano, convinto di rendere un servizio al proprio dio, mise fine all’ultimo umano tentativo di ripristinare l’ellenismo.
Ecco perché, con buona ragione, il ribelle Gore Vidal ha dedicato un capolavoro proprio al ribelle Giuliano Augusto. Certamente, come Prisco, anche Vidal preferisce l’intelligenza dell’uomo a tutte le magie. Né gli è dato di sapere se il mondo ispirato all’Ellade che tanto piaceva a Giuliano, sarebbe stato più vero, più buono, più bello del mondo ispirato al Golgota, che tanto piace ai cristiani. Di certo, però, Giuliano non merita il posto defilato cui lo condannarono i suoi successori cristiani, preoccupati di ucciderne subdolamente la memoria così come subdolamente ne avevano stroncato la vita.
Ancora giovanissimo, Gore Vidal dedicò cinque anni della sua prodigiosa intelligenza, della sua geniale creatività, della sua smisurata erudizione per ripristinare una verità storica astutamente travisata, così come Giuliano, alla medesima età, aveva dedicato tutte le sue forze per ripristinare una fede religiosa ritenuta autentica e un modello di vita reputato felice. Vidal lo ha fatto con le armi della letteratura; Giuliano preferiva farlo con le armi della filosofia o, se non bastava, degli eserciti.
E quando, con estremo rammarico, il lettore termina la lettura di questa grande epopea, ha ormai fatto proprie le parole di Prisco: “Talvolta ho l’impressione che la storia dell’impero romano sia un’interminabile sfilata della stessa gente. Sono tutti uguali, questi uomini d’azione. Soltanto Giuliano era diverso”.
