PERDITA, CRESCITA, ESPERIENZE. La scrittura di Mauro Covacich

1. Si ha la sensazione che il tuo romanzo A perdifiato sia una sorta dibildungsroman, di “romanzo di formazione”. Eppure Dario, il protagonista, è preda delle circostanze: la passione per una giovane donna, su tutti. Perché scegliere come protagonista un uomo che, a 36 anni suonati, sembra tutt’altro che padrone della sua vita? In una società di eterni giovani, avremo romanzi di eterna formazione?

Il fatto è che sono circondato da persone che stimo e amo e ammiro, nessuna delle quali però potrebbe rappresentare un modello etico diciamo ottocentesco. Non so, ho l’impressione che l’umanità dalle nostre parti sia fatta così e io sono capace di scrivere solo di ciò che conosco. Non scrivo per (tentare di) modificare le cose, scrivo per (tentare di) capirle. Perché anche i più puri di noi sono in un modo o nell’altro compromessi dall’epoca stessa? E’ questa domanda che mi fa sedere davanti al computer. Siamo tutti lanciati a folle velocità verso obiettivi ambiziosissimi. Cerchiamo tutti l’alta prestazione, l’eccellenza. La cosa che ci fa più orrore è la vita normale delle generazioni che ci hanno preceduto. Vogliamo i riflettori, vogliamo la stella sul marciapiede di Sunset Boulevard. E in questa folle corsa sulla cresta, basta niente e l’onda ti ingoia. Ti tolgono il contratto al call center e torni con le pezza al culo. In questo discorso lo sport contemporaneo è una metonimia perfetta. Una parte per il tutto. In questo discorso il maratoneta Dario è un professionista che per un niente si ferma un secondo, e l’onda lo ingoia. Poi c’è chi annega e chi, annaspando, raggiunge la riva.

2. Nel tuo pezzo su “L’Espresso” dal titolo Ho le vertigini da fiction lamentavi l’incapacità della letteratura italiana contemporanea di “mettere sotto torchio” la realtà. All’esatto opposto della tua analisi, viene in mente una frase di Alessandro Baricco: “Ognuno cerca nei libri quello che vuole. Io, francamente, non amo molto i libri che raccontano l’Italia. Nel senso che la si racconta già troppo e dappertutto. E per raccontarla – mi sto convincendo – basta effettivamente uno come Bocca: che bisogno c’è di scomodare la letteratura, la narrativa con la enne maiuscola? L’Italia non è un mistero così raffinato da non poter essere raccontato da un buon giornalista o da un’ora di televisione intelligente. Quindi dai libri – dai Libri – mi aspetto altro.” Come commenteresti questa affermazione?

Ricordo mal volentieri quel mio intervento. Quelli in buona fede lo hanno frainteso, quelli in cattiva fede hanno intasato la rete con malignità gratuite di ogni genere. Il mio era un atto d’amore per la narrativa italiana e di fiducia per le doti degli autori che citavo. Comuqne, venendo a Baricco, l’Italia merita di essere raccontata né più né meno del resto del mondo. La questione è come possa un autore che vive in un posto (e ne respira l’aria e ne fa esperienza, piangendo, gioendo eccetera) non trasmetterlo con la sua scrittura, come possa una pianta innervata qui non trasudare le tossine che assorbe quotidianamente, e soprattutto come possa, questa artificiosa renitenza, risultare artistica, letteraria, bella.

3. Hai sempre citato come tuoi modelli Don DeLillo e David Foster Wallace, scrittori americani importanti ma non molto apprezzati aldilà di una cerchia ristretta di lettori colti (“sono felice di avere non più di diecimila lettori”, ha detto Wallace in un’intervista): anche perché i loro sono libri “difficili”, senza ammiccamenti né trucchi per irretire il lettore. E’ vero che Wallace e DeLillo hanno raccontato la realtà contemporanea americana, ma lo hanno fatto anche (per citare qualche nome) Douglas Coupland o Tom Wolfe o James Ellroy, scrittori che invece godono di un successo di pubblico enorme, anche perché trucchi e ammiccamenti per “insaporire la pietanza” nei loro romanzi non mancano mai: la violenza e l’efferatezza in Ellroy, il gossip selvaggio e il voyeurismo verso il mondo dei ricchi in Wolfe, etc. Secondo te, i lettori del nostro Paese dovrebbero acquistare il romanzo dell’equivalente italiano di DeLillo (se esiste), e non quello dell’equivalente di Ellroy (sempre che esista anche lui, ovviamente)? E se sì, perché?

Per me la letteratura è una forma di conoscenza. La sua bellezza consiste nel farmi sentire cose sul mondo e sulla vita, come una performance di Marina Abramovic, come un film di Lars Von Trier. Come lettore (solo del tutto casualmente italiano) non mi interessa che il libro mi intrattenga. E comuqne in Italia ci sono diversi delilli pronti a scoppiare.

5. Tu giri molto per l’Italia, e hai certamente il polso e la sensibilità dei cambiamenti nel contesto culturale, cosa sta succedendo negli ultimi anni?

Che c’è una comunità nuova di gente che ama scrivere e ama leggere. Che c’è una nuova militanza letteraria. Un pullulare molecolare di gruppi, associazioni, eccetera che si battono per i buoni libri, anzi meglio, per le buone scritture. Che c’è una minoranza colta, intelligente, giovane, piena di desiderio e di energia, che si incontra, si scrive, si legge, si batte, con la consapevolezza di essere sempre meno minoranza e aspettando solo il momento buono per venire allo scoperto e fare il culo a tutti gli altri.
