Note su L ODORE DEL SANGUE E LE FIGURE DELLA SIMBIOSI di Paolo Vecchio

Il libro postumo di Parise esce nuovamente nell’edizione Bur, condito da un’illuminante prefazione di Cesare Garboli. Parise scrisse quasi di getto la storia nell’estate del ’79 per poi sigillarla e rileggerla solo due mesi prima della morte, nel 1986. Disse che alcune parti erano da riscrivere ma non ne ebbe il tempo. Romanzo composto in una sorta di excessus mentis, dice Garboli. Romanzo della gelosia e della morte. Storia di un matrimonio finito tra due cinquantenni, epilogo tragico su cui domina la visione narcolettica di Federico, che sa amare la moglie Silvia solo lontano da Roma, dove lei vive.
Federico, uno psicanalista che narra l’intera vicenda in prima persona, vive la sua doppia relazione con la moglie, e in Veneto con l’amante venticinquenne, attraverso le figure della distanza e del grigiore. L’idea che ha dell’amore alle soglie della senilità è quella di Longo Sofista: vivere casti e guardare gli amori degli altri.
Proprio attraverso il guardare, egli vive da vent’anni insieme a Silvia un rapporto amoroso platonico e adolescenziale, fatto di lunghe assenze e di lunghe telefonate. La visione di cui parliamo è logica, essa è metafora della distanza carnale tra i due e della distanza fisica. Silvia sa che egli convive in Veneto con la sua giovane amante, nonostante questo la loro vita coniugale è solida, serena. L’uomo considera la propria storia con Silvia una simbiosi simile a quella tra una statua intrecciata ad una liana; questo aveva visto nel tempio di Angkor Vat in Cambogia: una simbiosi insieme innaturale e spontanea. Questa immagine lo accompagna per tutto il racconto, ma i due elementi iniziano a disgiungersi all’occhio della mente quando anche Silvia inizia a frequentare un giovane fascista di Ordine Nuovo, dedito alla palestra e a un superomismo raffazzonato in strada.
Federico vive il suo matrimonio attraverso due “metodi” che seguono strade e obbiettivi diversi. Uno è logico e visivo, è il metodo che dà equilibrio. L’altro è istintivo, vitale: questo si inserisce nel campo simbolico della gioventù dalla quale entrambi si sentono attratti.
Da una parte “vede” la sua vita attraverso l’immagine della simbiosi. Non solo, grazie alle sue capacità speculative e, per così dire, divinatorie, “vede” la vita che Silvia conduce col suo amante, e le visioni si rivelano esatte anche nei particolari. Tali visioni valgono ad addormentare il suo matrimonio in un rapporto intenso, sincero ma indiretto, per quanto lo riguarda, e ad “esorcizzare” la sua gelosia nei confronti dell’amante. Di fronte alle tardive confessioni della donna, Federico si ritrova infatti ad aver già consumato mentalmente il suo dramma. La vista protegge dallo scandalo del reale come dietro un vetro. L’insistenza di Federico nel voler sapere ogni dettaglio coincide col voler vedere, conoscere, nonostante istintivamente egli già sappia: tutto questo nella convinzione che la chiarezza possa schermare la sofferenza.
L’altra modalità percettiva, che accompagna trasversalmente la narrazione, è un senso di fatalità, un oscuro presentimento animale che il narratore definisce l’odore del sangue. Per i due coniugi alle porte della vecchiaia, l’amore carnale è intessuto di immagini torbide, sinistre. La vitalità tattile del rapporto amoroso sembra essere negata ai due cinquantenni. Federico ne è amaramente consapevole; Silvia cade nel miraggio di una nuova passione e finisce per perdersi. Dietro il sogno romantico di “salvare” il ragazzo, del tutto plagiata dalla volontà di lui, entra nel giro della prostituzione per finire uccisa, tagliuzzata con una lametta in varie parti del corpo; una sorta di smembramento simbolico, quasi che un corpo di quell’età non possa sopportare la pressione dell’animalesco senza sfaldarsi.
Federico sa che la fatale passione della moglie nasce, come per lui, dal desiderio di partecipare a quella cultura elementare che è la cultura fisica, toccare la pelle giovane, con tutti gli odori e gli umori. L’attrazione per la gioventù è il fascino animalesco del tattile, del carnale: la sessualità vissuta e non solo guardata. Ma per i due non c’è altro tipo di comunione se non nelle immagini comuni: un piacere amaro che è il “vivere casti e guardare gli amori degli altri”, o ancora “guardare e vivere di riflesso il piacere altrui”. Silvia è felice quando si lascia masochisticamente comandare dai desideri sempre più violenti del suo amante: anche con Filippo, ha sempre amato attivamente, perseguendo il proprio piacere attraverso la soddisfazione del partner. Filippo vive il suo amore esteticamente, come un quadro nel quale si mostra un equilibrio rassicurante; una disposizione, dove la sua figura è centrale, e centrale in virtù della sua estraneità. Egli preferisce essere lontano da casa: grazie alla distanza – e l’immagine stessa è distanza – egli ama e desidera sua moglie.

Abbiamo detto che l’immagine tiene in piedi il rapporto tra i due, e insieme, esorcizza lo scandalo del tradimento – scandalo del reale, dell’animalesco che irrompe e minaccia di deformare l’immagine. Federico vuole conoscere tutta la verità, vedere ogni segno per disporlo nuovamente in una visione centrata. Nella sua ansia scientifica il narratore disgiunge gli elementi, raccoglie tutti i dati possibili per giungere non alla verità, ma a una verità tollerabile. Laddove si riaffaccia inavvertitamente la cognizione istintiva del reale – la chiameremmo verità senza immagini – egli piomba nel sonno o più spesso in una veglia narcotizzata che si protrae anche per giorni.
Anche il sonno è un modo di schermare la situazione, ammortizzarla in un vivere sospeso, interlocutorio e incerto, come è spesso la prosa del libro.
Citiamo allora il brano di una conversazione telefonica tra marito e moglie; Federico interroga Silvia sulle sue serate col ragazzo:

“Hai fatto tardi?”
“Te l’ho detto, le sei del mattino. Adesso ho sonno. Cercherò di dormire ancora un po’, ciao amore, semmai ti telefono più tardi. Sei sempre in casa tu?”
“Grosso modo.”
“Allora ti telefono più tardi.”
Telefonava più tardi.

Notiamo come la forma di questo dialogo sia frammentata, sospesa, alterata anche graficamente dalla scansione dei silenzi senza visione che incolonnano la conversazione telefonica. Silenzi e ripetizioni: il telefono compare tre volte, due volte si fa menzione del sonno, forma del loro vivere coniugale, laddove il giovane amante scarrozza Silvia nelle discoteche fino alle sei del mattino; Federico al contrario è sempre in casa, “grosso modo”, immalinconito nel grigiore di una vita che sopporta solo con il desiderio costante di essere altrove, fantasticare alternative, Silvia e Paloma, che si equivalgono e si annullano nella sostanziale inerzia. Anche lui, nel tempio di Angkor Vat, si addormenta, subito dopo aver formulato a se stesso l’idea della simbiosi tra scultura e liana. La vita coniugale tra i due è fatta di lunghi sonni, raramente fanno l’amore, preferiscono viversi nella distanza di un rapporto “platonico”.
La carnalità dell’amore si esprime attraverso il loro dormire avvinghiati, una consuetudine quasi rituale nella quale attenuano le reciproche ansie. Entrambi si vivono nell’assenza: Silvia ama proiettare la sua dedizione verso l’oggetto distante, Federico si allontana per essere amato e non dovere amare lui stesso.
Nulla di nuovo nella casistica amorosa, se non fosse che questo distacco appare identico allo schermo di immagini che, almeno per Federico, tiene in piedi il loro rapporto. Una distanza di corpi che è equilibrio di anime, ma solo in virtù del sonno, della separatezza dal reale che concede la chiarezza dell’immagine.
L’immagine è analizzata da Federico con ostinazione; più volte si interroga su chi sia la liana e chi la statua. Pur credendo l’intreccio inestirpabile, egli ha bisogno di distinguerne gli elementi. Ancora una volta l’analisi si propone la ricerca dell’autenticità di fatto negandola. Federico va a cercare la chiarezza dei due elementi distinti laddove esiste un groviglio oscuro, simbiosi che è unità effettiva.
Che cosa cerca Federico? Da più parti si è evidenziata la scena del pompino di Silvia al suo amante come scena madre del romanzo. Essa, è vero, ritorna ossessivamente, prima nelle visioni del marito geloso e poi confermata nelle parole di Silvia. L’Odore del sangue non è però solo il romanzo della gelosia e della morte. Ciò che ostinatamente Federico conserva, anche quando è sconvolto, quasi impazzito per il tradimento, è una distanza, un’assenza dell’oggetto amato che come assenza egli insegue e ama prima ancora di conoscere Silvia.
Davanti al cadavere della moglie, all’obitorio, il narratore ricorda una scena della sua infanzia. Vestito da Romeo scendeva per le cantine della casa dei nonni chiamando, in una specie di canto, il nome di Giulietta:

Non sapevo bene quello che volevo: quando me lo chiesero rispondevo che cercavo Giulietta.

Più tardi, nella vita, forse senza nemmeno saperlo, io avevo trovato Giulietta e il suo corpo nudo, verdastro e martoriato era lì davanti a me.

Credo di non aver mai amato Silvia in vent’anni come in quel momento in cui immaginai, anzi vidi me stesso disteso accanto a lei sul carrello dell’obitorio.

Federico non vuole nulla di concreto: cerca l’oggetto del suo amore attraverso il nome, e il nome risuona come un canto nell’assenza di chi lo porta. L’apice del suo amore Federico lo trova nel distacco irrimediabile della morte. Ancora una volta Giulietta non può rispondere al suo richiamo. Nell’obitorio, davanti al corpo morto di Silvia, Federico può fissare definitivamente l’immagine di una simbiosi vissuta nella mente, l’ultimo quadro di un amore che non c’è.
