IN RICORDO DI EDOARDO e di un altro modo di fare televisione di Andrea Camilleri

Il mio rapporto con Eduardo è nato con una serie per la televisione. Questa serie veniva dal proposito del secondo canale televisivo, nel ‘60, di distinguersi come programmazione, dal primo canale, per la qualità delle commedie (inaugurammo addirittura con un lavoro di uno scrittore come Giuseppe Dessì La trincea). C’erano dei grossi propositi e fu incaricato un importante funzionario del secondo che era Maurizio Ferrara, straordinario organizzatore, di vedere, di portare Eduardo De Filippo a fare le sue commedie in Rai. Credo che Maurizio abbia trattato a lungo con De Filippo ma c’era un problema di fondo; allora c’era una diffusa ostilità verso la Rai da parte della sinistra e quindi portare Eduardo in televisione sarebbe stato l’equivalente della breccia di Porta Pia, praticamente era questa l’operazione alla quale Bernabei per esempio teneva moltissimo. A un certo punto Maurizio Ferrara ci disse che le trattative erano concluse e che quindi si poteva ipotizzare seriamente la partecipazione di Eduardo a una serie televisiva, per quel periodo quanto più esaustiva possibile, (credo che fossero otto titoli all’epoca). Allora venne in mente alla direzione del secondo canale di chiamare me a produrre, ovvero delegato alla produzione di questa prima serie di Eduardo, a causa di vari problemi. Naturalmente il primo problema era Eduardo, “come maneggiarlo” questo grosso, esplosivo Eduardo. In secondo luogo Eduardo era un uomo di teatro e quindi loro dovevano “ripescare” uno che di teatro si intendesse, per metterglielo accanto. Io avevo questi requisiti e quindi mi incontrai con lui, presente Maurizio Ferrara, alla Rai. Lì capitò subito una sorta di piccolo miracolo nel senso che gli fui molto simpatico immediatamente. Naturalmente io sapevo non a memoria, ma quasi, tutte le sue commedie, le avevo viste. Gli raccontai un episodio che mi era capitato a proposito de La grande magia. Ero giovane, allievo dell’Accademia di Arte Drammatica: vidi la commedia una prima volta, ci tornai la seconda sera, la terza sera, la quarta sera, ogni volta entravo così, di straforo, con la complicità del direttore del teatro, e tutte le sere incontrai Silvio D’Amico. Eravamo diventati due habitué di quella straordinaria commedia. Per quanto riguardava le trasmissioni, si pose subito il problema del cosiddetto “adattamento televisivo” che in realtà non era gran cosa ma una sorta di “ampliamento dello spazio”. In teatro non c’era bisogno di avere un’anticamera, si sentivano le voci, mentre qui invece tutto doveva essere più realistico, ma non ci fu necessità di aggiungere battute. Aldo Nicolaj che fu l’adattatore risolse i vari problemi con Eduardo in due o tre sedute. Ci fu un certo “allungamento” delle sedute a causa di una grossa interruzione dovuta alla morte della moglie di Eduardo che avvenne proprio in quei giorni, in quei mesi, nei quali lavoravamo; e per una volta, e questo per me rimane un episodio memorabile, per una volta Aldo Nicolaj ed io andammo a trovarlo all’isola e fu un viaggio, non dico “omerico” ma quasi, perché la strada per arrivare a questo Nerano, paese dal quale si partì, era stata tutta interrotta, ci si poteva arrivare solo via mare. Allora ci imbarcammo tutti e due in giacca e cravatta perché dovevamo incontrare Eduardo, ma dopo un quarto d’ora eravamo in condizioni penose, praticamente ci eravamo levati la giacca, la cravatta, la camicia, tutto… Arrivammo in quest’isola, cominciammo a salire, c’erano dei gradini e in mezzo un marinaio seduto, ed ebbi l’impressione che fosse vestito e truccato da marinaio perché era “troppo” marinaio. Mi disse “Eduardo non c’è”. “E dov’è Eduardo?”. “Eduardo è a Positano. Provate a venire nel pomeriggio”. Nel pomeriggio arrivammo, non c’era il marinaio, e così vedemmo Eduardo nel suo habitat splendido, la sua villa. Luca era un bambino; mi ricordo, mi disse era stato troppo in acqua, era cotto dal sole. Fu un pomeriggio straordinario con un Eduardo “diverso”, nel suo ambiente, ridemmo da matti. Lì in quell’occasione stabilimmo le riprese, stabilimmo quanti giorni avremmo impiegato per queste, per le prove. Dopodiché io ebbi una sorta di “comando” da parte della direzione generale, da parte di Bernabei, che bisognava fare in modo che non capitasse assolutamente niente durante la lavorazione perché immediatamente ci sarebbe stata eco sui giornali ed era bene evitare queste cose. Ma Eduardo mi prevenne e disse: “Sentite Camilleri, io so che c’è questa censura” (che effettivamente c’era) “così, prima di entrare in sala prove, non in studio, parliamo di tutto questo. Alcune cose, se non portano fastidio a me, le tagliamo, altre non le taglio, e voi riferite a chi di dovere che io non le taglio”. E così facemmo. Proprio quando lui entrò in studio i copioni erano “ne varietur”, erano accettati da lui e dalla direzione quindi questo grosso scoglio della censura di allora era stato superato. Lui fu molto comprensivo; non accettò alcuni tagli di una stupidità davvero mostruosa, per cui ero il primo io a vergognarmi, sennonché i patti non li potei rispettare almeno in un punto. Il punto é in una commedia, credo che sia Le voci di dentro, in cui una battuta dice: “Una volta le feste si facevano con un prete, un sacrestano, quattro persone dietro e venivano una meraviglia. Ora per farle ci vogliono un ministro, quattro sottosegretari e vengono una schifezza”. Mi chiamano e mi dicono “Bisogna tagliare questa battuta”. “E no” dico “io avevo un patto con Eduardo. Il patto era di dirgli prima questi tagli, ora io non me la sento di chiederglielo”. Noi eravamo già in studio, ci avevano pensato tardi. Alle due del pomeriggio avevamo l’appuntamento, mi innervosisco talmente che nell’uscire di casa metto un piede nell’anta della porta per cui mi spacco gli occhiali di netto; non avevo un paio di ricambio quindi vado in studio in stato di menomazione assoluta dovendo poi discutere con Eduardo sui tagli. Mi metto in un angolo e decido “io mi gioco la carriera ma non gli dico niente” e soffrivo perché lui faceva riprovare molto bene questa battuta. “Che ve ne pare?”. “Molto bella, Eduardo, viene benissimo”. Dopo un’ora, un’ora e mezza mi fa “Non vi sembra troppo lunga come battuta?” “Sì, effettivamente un po’ lunga lo é”. “Tagliamo?”. “Tagliamo!”. “Tagliamo qui quando dice che ora coi ministri, coi sottosegretari viene una schifezza”. E la tagliò. Ma rimase a guardarmi per un po’ in quei suoi silenzi. Registrammo questa scena, questo atto, (allora si registrava un atto tutto intero, non c’era possibilità di montaggio), e scendendo allo Studio 3 per andare a prendere alle 17.30 il rituale caffè, lui mi fa dentro l’ascensore “Voi quella battuta la volevate tagliata, vero?”. “Sì, Eduardo”. “E perché non me l’avete detto?”. “Eduà, perché me l’hanno detto ieri e io non avevo il coraggio, e poi mi sono rotto gli occhiali, non vedo niente. Ma a voi chi ve l’ha detto di tagliarla?”. “La faccia vostra me l’ha detto, la faccia che facevate mentre io la provavo. E poi ho visto come vi é tornata la felicità sulla faccia”. Naturalmente, episodi di questo genere, ne sono successi tanti.
La Rai mi aveva dato l’incarico di fare di queste commedie, anche una sorta di volumetto, e questo era venuto, anche tipograficamente, molto bene. In questo volumetto io dovevo fare una introduzione di due o tre pagine sul teatro di Eduardo e poi raccontare ognuna delle commedie che si sarebbero trasmesse. C’erano delle foto di lui splendide; era venuto apposta Mulas a farle. Io dissi “Guardate Eduà che Sik-Sik l’artefice magico non fa serata, é più breve rispetto all’orario canonico”. E lui “Scrivete che io prima di Sik-Sik l’artefice magico, faccio una specie di piccola carrellata su quello che facevo nell’avanspettacolo, i miei esordi”. E lo realizzò con molta eleganza, con molta grazia. Tutta la scenografia era costituita da uno di quei portabiti delle sartorie teatrali, pieno di costumi suoi e lui ne prendeva uno, indossava la giacca e faceva il personaggio che aveva fatto vent’anni prima, trent’anni prima, e devo dire che era un momento straordinario di teatro puro. Non c’era scenografia, non c’era niente, c’era solo lui, un accenno di costumi e lì cantò, ballò, raccontò quell’episodio e dovemmo fermarci e rifarlo di nuovo perché non era stato provato, delle battute arrivarono per la prima volta allo studio e i cameraman non seppero tenere la risata.
Era l’episodio, non so quanto noto, in cui lui raccontava che il suo impresario aveva chiamato una famosa cantante di avanspettacolo, Eduardo ne faceva anche il nome, io non lo ricordo più, la quale la prima sera a Napoli disse: “Sentite, io stasera non posso cantare perché ho solo un filo di voce e invece di cantare dirò…” e disse la canzone, la disse come un fine dicitore. Siccome il pubblico era rimasto deluso, l’impresario chiese a Eduardo di buttarsi, di sgambettare, di ballare, per risollevare le sorti della serata.
E così il povero Eduardo giovanetto suda, sgambetta, balla e canta. La seconda sera la cantante si ripresenta e dice: “La voce non mi è tornata, invece di cantare dirò…” e disse la canzone. “Io mi ero scocciato” raccontava Eduardo “e così, entrai in scena zoppo e dissi: egregio pubblico, io stasera dovevo ballare ma siccome mi ero azzoppato una gamba passeggerò” e così fece. Questo episodio valse l’interruzione della ripresa perché detto da lui e fatto contemporaneamente, col suo costume e il suo passeggiare, risultava esilarante. Questo per esempio é un documento straordinario e nella prima serata mettemmo assieme queste memorie e Sik-Sik l’artefice magico.
Per quanto riguarda la commedia Ditegli sempre di sì, questa fu una ripresa straordinaria per me. Io venivo dall’Accademia d’Arte Drammatica, ero stato allievo di Orazio Costa, avevo un’idea del teatro in un certo modo e ho imparato in quei 7 o 8 mesi che sono stato con Eduardo assai più di teatro di quanto non avessi imparato in anni di Accademia. Lì mi capitò uno di questi straordinari momenti di insegnamento. Mentre faceva Ditegli sempre di sì, aveva un attor giovane molto bello come ragazzo, Lima, e costui non era d’accordo con l’impostazione che Eduardo aveva dato al personaggio, faceva resistenza, ma nessuno osava dire ad Eduardo, che tutti chiamavano direttore, “non sono d’accordo”. Noi eravamo costretti a registrare un atto per intero e Lima, arrivato davanti a Eduardo nella scena che aveva con lui, recitò in un modo completamente diverso da come avevano fino a quel momento provato, tanto che De Stefani ed io pensammo: fra due minuti ci andiamo a prendere un caffè perché Eduardo interromperà. Invece Eduardo non interruppe, ma diede un’interpretazione al suo personaggio, spero che esista ancora la registrazione, che non sia stata distrutta anche questa, straordinaria, imprevista anche per noi. Poi alla fine di quest’atto mi chiamò, mi disse: “Camillé venite con me”. Andammo nel suo camerino, si sedette e poi disse: “Mandatemi Lima!”. Arrivò questo giovane attore, lo fece accomodare e gli parlò: “Allora, vi faccio una domanda: che cos’è la recitazione fra due attori, non improvvisata? Eh Lima? Due attori che hanno provato per giorni, magari annoiati, magari avevano altri pensieri. Che cos’è?”. “Ma direttore non lo so perché mi fa questa domanda”. “Vi faccio la domanda perché voi siete una persona che bara al gioco. E la recitazione è un accordo di onestà, prima di tutto, e di lealtà, tra due attori che sono sullo stesso palcoscenico, hanno concordato come devono combaciare nella recitazione, in quello che il pubblico deve vedere. Voi cambiate le carte in tavola e non solo barate, ma mi mettete in una difficoltà infinita. Io oggi ho voluto dimostrarvi che, appena ho capito che cosa stavate facendo, io vi stendevo. E l’ho fatto”. “La possiamo rifare direttore?”. “No caro, rimane quella che è!”.
Questa semplice idea dell’accordo, cioè dell’accordo leale fra due persone che devono affrontare una stessa situazione, e uno dei due fa carte false, procurando danno all’altro, è un esempio per me pratico, proprio di teatro straordinario. Però, nessuno me lo aveva mai presentato sotto questa forma, in Accademia. In questo episodio sentii dietro una sorta di tradizione, delle grosse compagnie di giro, della capacità che potevano avere tali attori, d’improvvisare, di concertare. In genere lui improvvisava con attori di tradizione, di grossa tradizione; con Petito improvvisava, si concedeva questo lusso. Quel tipo d’improvvisazione che spinge all’estremo limite, quasi per gioco, il compagno, cimentandolo in una sorta di fuoco d’invenzioni, ma con misura, senza strafare.
Addirittura certe prove, certe scene, lui le saltava; cioè le provava con tutti gli altri e si riservava gli ultimi 10 minuti di prova con Petito o con altri di quel calibro.
Un altro momento affascinante è stato Natale in casa Cupiello con Pietro De Vico e Enzo Petito. Pietro De Vico da anni non la recitava con lui ed Eduardo lo volle apposta per quella registrazione. C’erano dei discorsi sotterranei, non detti, fra loro. “Camilleri, vi ho chiamato. Voglio De Vico!”. De Vico sapeva il significato di quella chiamata, dell’ingaggio in quella situazione. Era emozionante, in questo senso, vederli lavorare.
Per esempio in Filumena Marturano, un attimo prima di cominciare le riprese lui disse a Regina Bianchi: “Regì, guarda che poi questo Titina se lo guarda”. Regina tirò la parte in un modo, un modo eccezionale e quando finimmo il primo atto, la scena in cui lei ha i soldi, io mi buttai giù dalla scaletta, per correre ad abbracciarla; mi svenne tra le braccia perché grande era stata la tensione provocata dalle parole di Eduardo. Lui glielo aveva detto apposta, per metterla in uno stato emotivo eccezionale.
C’è una cosa, inoltre, che mi ha sempre colpito in Eduardo regista. Di solito il regista dice, ti spiega, ti dice qual è la sua intenzione, cerca una mediazione dell’attore condizionata sempre dall’idea che ha lui. Eduardo aveva un modo di intervenire che non del tipo “ora te lo faccio io”. Perché sapeva che l’attore poteva tentare di imitarlo ma poi era costretto a recitare secondo il suo proprio modo. Anche questa è una grossa apertura di orizzonti straordinari: Eduardo era convinto che l’attore sapesse “fare”. Questa era la fiducia che lui aveva. Molti dicevano che Eduardo non amasse tanto i suoi attori. Non li amava nella loro pigrizia però. Sapeva che avevano delle possibilità, delle potenzialità. Tant’è vero che spesso e volentieri venivano fuori.
Tutti i registi sono cattivi. Eduardo probabilmente era esplicitamente cattivo, ma, torno a dire che era una cattiveria mirata, per tirare fuori dall’attore i suoi personaggi; capiva perfettamente gli attori, sapeva quando era giornata e quando non lo era. Questo non significava per lui dare confidenza o meno, é stato sempre dentro la sua posizione ma aveva la capacità di proiettarsi all’interno degli altri, dell’altro attore non del personaggio, il personaggio veniva dopo.
Una cosa che ha molto valore era la sua sensibilità per le telecamere, perché Stefano de Stefani, un regista di tutto rispetto, faceva quasi solo il tecnico, mentre tutta la direzione era di Eduardo, non solo per quanto riguardava la recitazione.
Lui non aveva mai visto una telecamera prima, aveva visto solo macchine da presa, ma un’ora e mezzo gli bastò per capire. Eduardo si impadronì immediatamente di questo, che, come raccontano aneddoti famosi, chiamava un “elettrodomestico”. Tornando sempre alla storia della censura, avevano detto che bisognava togliere i “per Dio” che l’ex aiuto di Domenico Soriano ogni tanto dice “se mi ricordo per Dio”, battuta straordinaria, meravigliosa. “Tanto vale togliere il personaggio, io non li levo”. Quelli della rete si arresero davanti a tanta sicurezza.
Eduardo in ripresa disse: “Qui Stefano mi dai il primo piano su questi – per Dio – che lui dice”. Poi rivedeva la scena e, anche se era venuta perfetta, lui la rifaceva.
“Stefano i – per Dio – non li riprendere più in primo piano”. Aveva evidentemente intuito che questi primi piani davano un peso eccessivo all’interiezione e che non era il caso di sottolinearli così.
Tra l’altro, in quell’occasione ho capito che tutta questa diversità della televisione, riprendendo il teatro, poteva essere valido aiuto. Eduardo mi disse un’altra cosa straordinaria che, da sola, vale un trattato sulla televisione: “Quella è cecata, ha un solo occhio” disse, “nel senso che la gente vede con un unico occhio. Il mio”.
Lui soffriva della scelta di quello che c’era da mostrare televisivamente, in un teatro fatto di relazioni tra personaggi, di “controscene”, se vogliamo. Questo fu il vero problema quando cominciò a riprendere. Infatti, Filumena Marturano, per l’ottanta per cento è tutta giocata sui primi piani, in maniera da prendere anche le controscene, le azioni. Quindi la televisione l’aveva capita immediatamente, anche all’interno del mezzo stesso.
Lui teorizzò alla fine, soprattutto nell’ultimo periodo, nel ‘78, questa idea che la televisione è “lo spettatore con il binocolo”, e quindi la ripresa va fatta di qua dal boccascena, senza più adattamento. Proprio come lo spettatore che concentra l’attenzione in un primo piano, il carrello è lo spostamento degli occhi dello spettatore, lo zoom il concentrarsi dell’attenzione, lui ha dato poi anche dei modelli.
Circa le riprese di Napoli Milionaria non ho ricordi particolari perché, in realtà, tutto si svolse in una tranquillità che, nella memoria, diventa quasi irreale. Anche perché quei pochi incidenti che capitarono, lui li fece capitare a bella posta, preavvisandomi: “Domani guardate che faccio succedere questo, voi non vi preoccupate!”. Io, era un sabato, dovevo raggiungere la famiglia con Eduardo: “Ma voi non vi preoccupate, lunedì riprendiamo tranquillamente”. Mi telefonarono: lui aveva fatto una scenata per la scenografia, aveva detto: “Basta io me ne vado! Vado a Napoli, non registro più!”. Uscì dallo studio e se ne andò davvero. Allora mi raggiunsero dov’ero io con telefonate terrorizzate.
L’unico dubbio che ebbi è che fosse andato veramente a Napoli. Telefonai a casa sua: era tranquillo: “Perché vi siete preoccupato? Vi avevo detto che lunedì ci vedevamo?”.
Tutto questo nasceva da una discussione tra lui e il direttore del centro di produzione, che era un triestino. “Salvando l’unità d’Italia era meglio se se la tenevano!”. Questa era la sua opinione in proposito. Sul fatto della scenografia quello diceva: “Noi l’abbiamo già fatta, voi dovevate approvarla prima, perché non avete fatto prima queste osservazioni?”. E lui: “Anche in teatro mi capita di fare osservazioni. Una volta che uno ‘vede’ la cosa la cambia!”. E lo scenografo: “No, ormai noi non possiamo cambiare, le giornate lavorative, le ore di lavoro…” Piantò la grana e se ne andò. E lui mi disse : “Lunedì mattina in due ore si cambia come io ho chiesto”. Infatti il lunedì mattina andai in studio, lui arrivò puntuale: la scena era stata cambiata e tutto filò tranquillamente.
Di episodi ce ne sono tanti. Per esempio quello degli spaghetti in Sabato, Domenica e Lunedì dove l’atto finisce con un attore vestito a Pulcinella che deve andare a recitare il personaggio e gli altri devono andare a mangiare gli spaghetti. Questo attore, non si è mai capito perché, all’ultimo secondo, momento in cui saluta tutti ed esce, invece di uscire normalmente, oltretutto era anche inquadrato dalla telecamera, si piegò sulle ginocchia ed uscì praticamente a quattro zampe. “E che avete fatto?!?” disse Eduardo. Bisognava rifare tutto. Si era avvicinata la pausa serale e mangiammo qualche cosa, riprendemmo alle nove meno un quarto di sera, entrammo nello studio per primi Eduardo ed io ed Eduardo mi disse: “Io non ho il coraggio di vedere in che stato stanno gli spaghetti, guardate voi!”. Io alzai il coperchio, infilai dentro la forchetta: un blocco compatto di spaghetti. Fu una cosa drammatica perché il bar di via Teulada era chiuso, andare in un ristorante vicino era l’unica soluzione ma avrebbe ritardato la registrazione. Insomma una serata veramente indimenticabile. E poi Eduardo ci teneva a come fossero cotti quegli spaghetti “Perché me li devo mangiare io!”, diceva. Mi ricordo che mi accompagnò al ristorante, dove naturalmente, si fecero in quaranta per fare gli spaghetti come diceva lui: al punto giusto di cottura, calcolando anche il trasporto dal ristorante allo studio e all’inizio delle riprese. Una cosa meravigliosa!
Un altro episodio straordinario è ne Le voci di dentro dove c’è quel personaggio magnifico dello zio che parla con i mortaretti e che dice, nel momento nel quale muore: “Ma io che parlo a fare?” e poi accende quella sorta di fontana luminosa verde. Alle prove tutto procede benissimo in studio, tutto. Naturalmente ogni volta bisognava accendere una fontanella nuova. C’era il trovarobe che metteva la fontanella nuova. Al momento della registrazione procede tutto meravigliosamente bene, lo zio accende la fontanella verde, gioco di fuoco e succede un cataclisma, nel senso che parte un razzo strepitoso, all’interno dello studio, esplodendo, provocando il panico generale; in più siccome nella scenografia c’erano centinaia di sedie impagliate, questo razzo va, ovviamente, ad infilarsi dentro alle sedie, incendiandole. Arrivano i vigili del fuoco in studio, io mi ero precipitato dalla scaletta di regia e, in mezzo al fumo, in piedi e assolutamente tristissimo trovai Eduardo che mi disse: “Lo vedete perché io non posso vedere la televisione? Perché la televisione è in mano ai preti e ai piemontesi che non distinguono una fontanella da un mascone.”
Poi, quando mandarono in onda queste otto commedie, io dissi a mia moglie: “Appena finiscono di andare in onda scrivo una lettera ad Eduardo nella quale gli dico che cosa è stato per me lavorare con lui tutti questi mesi”. Non feci in tempo perché l’indomani la posta mi recapitò una lettera di Eduardo che diceva: “Camilleri voi non sapete che cosa è stato, per me, lavorare con voi sei mesi.” E di questo mi diede la prova: quattro, cinque anni dopo mi telefonò un poeta che io stimavo tantissimo, Vittorio Sereni, che era direttore editoriale della Mondadori. E mi disse, io non lo conoscevo: “Potrei vederla all’albergo Plaza? Le vorrei parlare”. Andai a trovare Sereni il quale mi disse: “Senta Camilleri, a noi della Mondadori c’è venuto in mente di fare un libro. Eduardo De Filippo non ha mai risposto a tutti quelli che, nel corso della sua carriera, gli hanno spedito già quattro casse di lettere. Gli è venuto in mente di rispondere ora, a distanza di tanto tempo. Si tratta di scegliere una cinquantina di lettere, darle a Eduardo e Eduardo deve elaborare una risposta facendone un libro di Eduardo De Filippo a cura di Andrea Camilleri. Il nome suo l’ha fatto Eduardo.” Allora andai da Eduardo con Vittorio Sereni e Eduardo mi disse: “Sentite Camilleri qua ci ho queste quattro casse di corrispondenza. Voi ve la leggete in santa pace e scegliete cinquanta lettere cattive, anzi è meglio, e io rispondo. Siete voi che avete in mano il libro; io non dirò nulla sulla scelta che voi fate delle lettere, basta che non ne scrivete una voi e la mettete in mezzo”. Firmai il contratto con la Mondadori e mi capitò, mentre stavo leggendo le lettere, un fatto personale gravissimo per cui io quel libro non lo feci mai. E arrivato ad un certo punto Sereni mi scrisse dandomi una sorta di ultimatum e io risposi che non l’avrei fatto. Sereni mi ritelefonò dicendomi: “Il problema è che Eduardo non lo vuole fare con nessun altro.” Alla Pergola a Firenze incontrai Eduardo, mi chiamò in disparte e disse: “Perché?”. Io gli spiegai che cosa mi era capitato, mi abbracciò e la cosa finì lì e rimase, per me, questa grande occasione perduta.
L’immagine che uno aveva di Eduardo era di un uomo corazzato, un uomo che si difendeva anche recitando la parte che si era assegnata lui stesso nella vita. Allora il vigile fa: ” Sono vostri?” indicando gli uomini ed Eduardo risponde: “Eventualmente!”. Straordinario! Cioè a dire è un uso incredibile. Voleva dire in quel caso : “A seconda di come ti metti”.
Quando ci fece visitare l’isola, a me e ad Aldo Nicolaj, mi fece vedere che aveva la centrale elettrica autonoma, un generatore. “Così io me la spasso qui la sera, accendo il televisore, e guardo mio fratello Peppino che fa Peppino al balcone”. Tutte e due amavano Titina. Peppino era come schiacciato un po’ dal peso di Eduardo, che stimava enormemente. Eduardo faceva finta di non stimare Peppino, ma faceva finta. Io credo che le cose stessero in questo modo. A me personalmente capitò, alcuni anni dopo aver fatto il produttore di Eduardo, di dirigere Peppino in sei puntate di una trasmissione che si chiamava la Carretta dei Comici, di Vittoria Ottolenghi, dove si partiva dalla Commedia dell’Arte e si arrivava alle grandi Farse dell’Ottocento. Un giorno, mentre scendevo da via Teulada, un signore mi disse: “C’è Eduardo che vi chiama!” Infatti mi voltai, mi fermai e c’era Eduardo che mi stava inseguendo. Si avvicinò col fiatone e mi disse: “Come state Camillé? Come state?”. “Sto bene Eduardo! E voi? So che avete avuto…”, perché gli avevano messo il pace-maker “No. Ma sto bene, sto bene”. E quindi segue una di queste pause mostruose di Eduardo, in cui non sai che dire, che fare. Dopodiché solleva gli occhi, mi guarda e fa: “So che dopo di me avete lavorato con mio fratello Peppino!”. Allargò le braccia: “Che ci volete fà Camillé, la vita!” E se ne andò. Io sono convinto che si era fatto la corsa solo per dire questa battuta finale. Si capiva che Eduardo avrebbe dato la vita per una battuta! La battuta era evidentemente per lui quello che oggi chiamano l’input. E attorno ci costruiva una commedia.
Io gli chiesi una volta dei suoi rapporti con Pirandello. Avevano fatto L’Abito Nuovo insieme. Lui aveva una sorta di stima-disistima. Stima l’aveva come uomo di teatro, aveva minore stima come inventore di commedie. Mi raccontò che i Sei Personaggi in realtà non erano originali, ma risalivano non so a quale fonte. Però diceva alla fine: “Come l’ha saputo strutturare lui…”. Ecco ero curioso avrei voluto saperne di più, ma poi finiva che il lavoro ci prendeva e di altre questioni si parlava poco.
Questo fatto di lavorare su commedie di altri, toccò anche Eduardo. Filumena Marturano come spunto, nasce da una commedia di Aniére, una commedia argentina, più fatto di cronaca, di questa donna che si era andata a sposare in punto di morte dall’amante, dopo trent’anni.
Quando mi capita, rivedo volentieri le sue commedie. E’ impressionante la non datazione di alcune cose: Napoli Milionaria è ambientata lì, nella Napoli del dopoguerra, dopoguerra eterno, quei sentimenti, quelle cose che ci sono dentro, e anche con una coscienza dell’ovvietà di una data situazione, che è una finezza strepitosa.
Se si pensa che Filumena Marturano comincia dove un altro autore avrebbe fatto il terzo atto, ovvero comincia a cose fatte, è un’altra cosa straordinaria di Eduardo.
Anche la storia di un atto che poi si moltiplica in tre atti, per esempio, è qualcosa che capita sovente in Eduardo. Drammaturgicamente è stato proprio un grande, forse gli è nuociuto essere anche regista, attore, oltre che autore. Ma lui teneva soprattutto ad essere un grande attore, cosa che è stata sempre la sua passione.
Esiste un legame, un ascendente che l’attore esercita sullo spettatore e fa parte di quel mistero vero dell’attore che “avverte” il pubblico. I tempi nella televisione erano molto diversi. Ci fu un ritardo iniziale il primo giorno, (lo dico onestamente e possono testimoniarlo i superstiti di questa cosa), perché il secondo giorno di prove lui volle non registrare, ma riprovare. Siccome noi registravamo in ordine, la prima cosa che lui vedeva era questa carrellata che precedeva Sik-Sik. Eduardo si studiò a lungo, abbassò tantissimo i livelli, alterò molto i ritmi. Credo che quell’esperienza sulla sua pelle gli sia servita moltissimo per l’impostazione. Non ha dovuto più correggere dopo, adeguare certi ritmi con il ritmo televisivo. La cosa che lui voleva, ed in questo era molto preciso ed insistente, era che sul copione ci fosse scritta la telecamera e il piano, allora l’obbiettivo non c’era, (non c’era lo zoom). Quindi questo copione se lo portava a casa. Voglio dire che quando poi arrivava a registrare, a provare in studio prima di registrare, faceva pochissime correzioni perché, questa sorta di adeguamento dell’immagine alla parola se l’era studiata a casa.
Il teleromanzo Peppino Girella nacque proprio nei giorni nei quali lavorava per le otto commedie e venne da una proposta di Maurizio Ferrara. Eduardo rispose quasi immediatamente dicendo: “Una mezza idea io ce l’avevo” e lì cominciò ad elaborare Peppino Girella.
Ma di questo con me non parlò mai perché si sapeva che io con la serie delle commedie avrei chiuso con Eduardo; passavo ad occuparmi di una serie sulla quale la rete contava molto che era la serie di Maigret che ho prodotto io, per tutte le trenta puntate, con Gino Cervi.

Questa sorta di scommessa azzardata di iniziare il lavoro senza una battuta, lasciando una sorta di tensione sempre, per dire: “Ma dove va a finire?”. Questo, come attore, è il momento in cui io l’ho trovato proprio straordinario. Poi ci sono i momenti che sono più espliciti di Eduardo. Ma un altro momento che, a me personalmente, ha sempre commosso, perché era la stessa cosa che faceva in teatro, in Filumena Marturano l’ha ripetuta in televisione, è il momento nel quale si volta perché sente Filumena che piange. Ecco! Basta solo il dettaglio della faccia, quando si volta, perché l’ha sentita prima, quindi il voltarsi è una conferma: momento davvero straziante. E lo spettatore è preceduto dalla battuta: “Solo chi ha provato la felicità, la gioia, può piangere”. E se la disegna tutta lui in faccia, praticamente le ruba la scena: per una frazione di secondo tu convergi solo su di lui.
La cosa che ritengo davvero straordinaria è come per i napoletani lui sia ancora presente, vivo, nei modi di dire, nelle citazioni di sue battute. Noi siamo stati a Vicolo San Liborio, vicolo di Filumena Marturano, ed è nata come una specie di piccola inchiesta e la gente Ë convinta che Filumena Marturano abitava lì e ci hanno mostrato la casa. È diventato ormai più che un personaggio, è qualcosa di vivo. Questo è straordinario.
