Cosa facevo a sedici anni, precisamente l’estate del 1990, trentotto gradi celsius o giù di lì, mentre Moravia se ne andava con un lungo sbadiglio di disapprovazione, dopo l’uscita sbagliata di Walter Zenga su Caniggia, dopo essere stato ingiustamente rimandato in fisica e matematica, dopo aver visto i miei genitori, mano nella mano, svanire tra i riflessi di una porta a vetri all’aeroporto di Palese, Nelson Mandela tornava un uomo libero, d’accordo, le due Germanie si riunivano in un abbraccio di euforia e sospetto reciproco, benissimo, ma io, in tutto questo, a cosa mi votavo? Qual era il mio piccolo contributo al nuovo ordine mondiale che andava profilandosi tra le macerie della Guerra Fredda nelle forme di una grandiosa emme gialla su sfondo rosso? Mi bevevo tutte quelle stronzate sull’Età dell’Acquario? Orientavo il mio letto in direzione dei continenti scomparsi? O al contrario, cercavo di farmi una vera coscienza politica? Leggevo i giornali, allora? Avvertivo la tiepida corrente di progressismo che iniziava a percorrere gli scacchieri occidentali? Sudavo almeno sulle equazioni di Maxwell? Niente di tutto questo. Era estate. Faceva un caldo della madonna. Ero rimasto a Bari e andavo a comprare il fumo con Giuseppe Annacontini. Lui si era preso latino, greco e matematica. Ci muovevamo sul suo vespone per le strade della Madonnella. Conoscevamo i nuovi fondamenti di geopolitica facendo il giro degli spacciatori. Bastava farsi due chiacchiere con Maxi il drogato, oppure giocare a biliardo con Fabio Cesaro, avere un minimo di astrazione e ricomporre le loro frasi smozzicate su uno scenario più complesso. E allora sì che avevi il quadro della situazione. Altro che telegiornali. Altro che New Labour. Altro che riduzione delle testate nucleari. Altro che dimissioni della Tatcher. La globalizzazione! La parabola della roba era molto istruttiva. Partiva dal Sudamerica, faceva tappa in Spagna, e poi, da la Coruňa, arrivava dritta a Milano, il centro di smistamento per l’Italia. Oppure, caduto il muro, tonnellate di coca iniziavano ad arrivare dall’Albania, dal Montenegro, dalla Slovenia e dall’Ucraina. Non erano i nodi luminescenti di una rete planetaria? La globalizzazione… Giuseppe scioglieva il fumo sul vespone, poi si fermava, dava la prima boccata sullo sfondo del Lungomare e mi diceva emozionato: “Madonna mia, come ti posso dire… mi sento al centro di qualcosa”.

Gli spacciatori della zona erano tutti infrequentabili. La maggior parte erano avanzi di galera. Sostavano come grossi rettili grigiastri ai piedi dei palazzi e all’uscita dei bar. Erano fermi sotto il sole, nel centro esatto delle isole pedonali. Ti sentivano arrivare e alzavano la testa. Ti accoglievano con sguardi feroci. Chiedevano “ma fè trend?” Ti davano meno di quanto avrebbero dovuto e ti mandavano a casa a calci in culo. Riuscire ad affrontarli era uno dei pochi sistemi allora conosciuti per costruirsi un’individualità. Li vedevamo diventare i padroni della zona per un paio di mesi. Poi scomparivano, sostituiti da altri, anche peggiori di loro. Il turn-over era impressionante. Ma la vecchia Amalia Oliva, sessantacinque anni, da tutti conosciuta come “la Signora”, il decano degli spacciatori del quartiere, lei no, è rimasta salda nel suo appartamento di via Vaccaro per oltre quindici anni, svezzando quattro generazioni di tossici e consumatori della domenica. Con lei comprare il fumo era un’esperienza diversa. La nonna che io e Giuseppe Annacontini non avevamo mai avuto.

Per molto tempo la Signora è stata tra gli insospettabili. Se da Durazzo un carico di roba arrivava fino a lei, non c’erano dubbi, il cerchio si sarebbe chiuso perfettamente fino alle briciole del piccolo consumo. Gli altri spacciatori erano quasi tutti maschi, pregiudicati e sotto i quaranta. La Signora, con la busta della spesa, sembrava una comune pensionata. Gli altri vendevano per strada e la Signora a casa sua. Il dieci per cento dei pusher che spacciavano eroina erano eroinomani e il novantanove per cento di quelli che trattavano la coca tiravano come i disperati. La Signora in vita sua non si era fatta mai neanche una canna. Erano questi elementi che davano garanzie, che ti facevano sentire tranquillo, che le hanno permesso, soprattutto, di cavalcare l’onda dell’impunità fino alla scorsa settimana. Suo marito era morto da quindici anni, ma aveva una figlia che assomigliava a Brooke Shields, tanto era bella e inespressiva, e tre o quattro nipoti che giravano per casa. Il palazzo non aveva ascensore. Lei stava al terzo piano. L’appartamento era pieno di tende e di merletti. Alle pareti c’erano quadri di pittori locali, tutti mostruosamente fedeli a un’idea completamente distorta della campagna pugliese. Quando io e Giuseppe Annacontini passavamo da quelle parti, sentivamo la voce della Signora gracchiare allegramente dal citofono. “Giusè’, Colì, salit’ salit’ che fazzc’u’cafè”.

Era questa la cosa che non sono mai riuscito a capire. Quanto la Signora ci marciasse e quanto invece nella sua testa agisse la più profonda e salvifica delle rimozioni. Perché la Signora vendeva cocaina, hashish, ecstacy, eroina. E non solo. In casa sua trovavi sigarette, casse di vino, uniformi militari, videoregistratori e paccottiglia di ogni genere. La vecchietta faceva sul serio. Eppure, quando andavi a trovarla, scattava la più mirabile delle finzioni. Sembrava veramente che fossi andato a fare visita a tua nonna. Ti accoglieva con tè e biscotti, ti chiamava sempre “figgh’ bell’”. Giuseppe Annacontini gli raccontava i fatti suoi, lei annuiva, rispondeva per massime e nel frattempo incellofanava la coca con la stessa innocenza di chi sta preparando una crostata di mele. Sembrava non rendersi conto di andare dritto come un treno contro la legge e la morale comune. E anche noi, ci convincevamo a un certo punto di essere nel più ordinario dei mondi. C’erano giorni in cui Angelo Di Giovanni e Rocco Salatino tiravano in camera da letto, Annamaria Brevetti si faceva una pera nel cesso, io e Giuseppe aprivamo le finestre del soggiorno per far disperdere il fumo della decima canna della giornata. La Signora sembrava non accorgersi di niente. Faceva i piatti. Rigovernava la sala da pranzo. Alzava un po’ la voce quando c’era troppo casino e ogni tanto rispondeva al telefono. Avevi l’impressione di vivere in un mondo parallelo, dove una dose di tailandese grigia equivaleva a un pacco di tarallucci all’anice. Eravamo tutti così perfettamente calati nella parte da ritenere quanto meno irreale l’eventualità di una retata della polizia. E di retate, infatti, non si vedeva neanche l’ombra.

Ma gli anni sono passati. Quattro generazioni sono passate nell’appartamento di via Vaccaro. Alle magliette con la faccia di Renato Zero sono seguite quelle con l’immagine di Kurt Cobain e poi il costosissimo abbigliamento da rapper suburbano dei sedicenni di oggi. La signora ha commesso un errore. A un certo punto, in una stanza poco illuminata della sua testa, si deve essere accesa una lampadina. Ha capito definitivamente che una pasticca di ecstasy non è diversa dalla Saila solo per la faccenda del buco. Ha finalmente realizzato qual è stato il suo ruolo per tutti questi anni. E allora ha cercato di adeguarsi. Si è comprata una Mercedes. Ne ha presa una anche alla figlia. Ha vinto l’asta per il piano di sopra e ha trasformato una mansarda polverosa in un superattico. Insomma, si è fatta notare un po’. Quando la settimana scorsa i carabinieri hanno fatto irruzione nell’appartamento sembra che abbia reagito malissimo. Ha fatto un solo fascio di santi, madonne e governo ladro. Sono salite bestemmie che nessuno di noi ha mai creduto potessero uscirle dalla bocca. Adesso è dietro le sbarre. Ma del resto, chi in questi ultimi dieci anni non ha commesso errori? Giuseppe Annacontini ha sbagliato matrimonio. Io mi sono illuso di potermi comprare casa con le azioni del Nasdaq. Tony Blair ha affondato tutte le buone intenzioni del New Labour nel Golfo Persico. Visto al tramonto, il mare di San Giorgio oggi sembrava una grande distesa di vino rosso. Mi bevo l’ultimo bicchiere e mi accendo un’altra cicca. E poi, stasera, Giuseppe Annacontini me ne prepara una sotto gli occhi, lunga e tortuosa come la pista di Montecarlo. Prosit.
