5 DOMANDE ED UN COMMENTO A CHI FA LIBRI OGGI, a cura di Michele Infante

1. Vi è un eccesso di produzione, a suo avviso, rispetto alla reale domanda del mercato dei lettori nell’attuale contesto italiano, e se c’è, cosa esso comporta?

2. Come giudica l’iniziativa della vendita a prezzi contenuti di romanzi in allegato ai maggiori quotidiani italiani, e che influenza può avere ciò sul mercato editoriale italiano?

3. Le stime di vendita che Lei fa dei libri che edita su quali criteri si basano?

4. Saprebbe indicare dei libri che avrebbe voluto “fare” ma che per diverse ragioni (quali?) non ha potuto o non avete potuto pubblicare?

5. Festival di letteratura, festival di filosofia, fiere del libro, un calendario fittissimo di incontri, conferenze, presentazioni, dibattiti, reading. La spettacolarizzazione della cultura, la creazione dell’evento: quanto avvicinano il pubblico alla lettura?

6. Come commenterebbe questo stralcio dell’intervista-conversazione che ho avuto con Raffale La Capria e che è pubblicato sul n. 4 della nostra rivista.

M. I. Sembra che non vi siano più riferimenti per capire cosa è letteratura e cosa non è letteratura oggi, tutto è opinabile, il successo di pubblico non è garanzia per un buon libro, come non lo è quello della critica, vi sono libri fatti in serie, best-seller d’ottima qualità. Buoni libri editi da piccoli o sconosciuti editori, e libri pubblicati con costose campagne pubblicitarie che non riescono nemmeno a rispettare le proiezioni per difetto dei responsabili del marketing. Che succede?
R. La Capria: Semplicemente che tutti sanno scrivere un libro che sembra unlibro scritto bene. Così non c’è una divisione netta tra cattiva e buona letteratura, vi è una buona-cattiva letteratura che è quella che per lo più fanno gli editori oggi. Praticamente l’80% dei libri che escono, libri ritenuti pubblicabili e pubblicati, sono cattiva-buona letteratura. Libri scritti bene, con gli aggettivi al loro posto, il periodo ordinato e ben strutturati.
M.I. Ma allora cos’è che non va?
R.L.C. Questi libri non hanno l’anima, sono disanimati, è una letteratura disanimata, che però va per la maggiore perché è quella che si vende di più. Le portaerei della letteratura, i best-seller americani tipo Stephen King,sono fatti da autori che sono capaci di creare intrecci all’altezza, e a volte addirittura dosati meglio di quelli di un Dostoevsky, però sono tuttifatti meccanicamente, fatti con le tecnica del romanzo, non sono fatti con l’irresistibile vocazione a raccontare le peripezie di un personaggio rappresentativo di un epoca. Dov’è oggi un personaggio in cui tutti possono riconoscersi?
M.I. L’epoca contemporanea è un epoca di eguali? Di mediocri che possono permettersi nel nostro sistema culturale di poter arrivare alla stampa?
L.C. Questa è l’epoca dell’omologazione, e certamente vi è un omologazione anche nel gusto del pubblico e nel livello medio della cultura che cerca d’essere accessibile a tutti.

Elisabetta Sgarbi è direttore editoriale per Bompiani (gruppo RCS). Ha rivelato all’attenzione del pubblico italiano scrittori come Paulo Coelho, Hanif Kureishi, Amin Maalouf e Michael Cunningham. Insieme a Pier Vittorio Tondelli, Alain Elkann e Elisabetta Rasy, ha fondato “Panta”, rivista letteraria unica nel panorama italiano. All’attività di direttore editoriale unisce quella di scrittrice, regista e produttore cinematografico.

1. Quello che a molti sembra essere un eccesso di produzione la conseguenza, semplicemente, dei meccanismi della domanda e dell’offerta. Il mercato librario funziona così, perchè dolersene?
Una maggiore quantità di libri offerti significa maggiore possibilità di scelta per il lettore.

2. La consuetudine di questi anni di allegare romanzi ai quotidiani (ma analoghe iniziative in edicola erano in precedenza anche le collane degli editori di collezionabili) ha il merito di rilanciare testi quasi sempre classici, italiani o stranieri, che magari i lettori che non frequentano le librerie non avrebbero modo di notare in altra maniera.

3. I dati statistici, gli indici di gradimento desunti dalle classifiche italiane e straniere, ma anche le risposte dei librai e dei lettori sul campo. Certo, conta molto anche l’intuito: si tratta di annusare l’aria, come sapevano fare, ad esempio, i grandi editori del passato: Valentino Bompiani, Angelo Rizzoli, Arnoldo Mondadori

4. Preferisco dire che ci sono stati libri che sulla carta non davano speranze, ma che ho voluto ugualmente fare perchè credevo in essi e nei loro autori, e il tempo so che mi darà ragione, come in parte mi ha dato già ragione a giudicare dalle accoglienze dei critici. Il caso emblematico è quello di Edward Carey, di cui stiamo pubblicando un secondo libro, dopo “Observatory Mansions”. L’importante, come sempre, è perseverare.

5. La spettacolarizzazione della cultura può essere giudicata un fenomeno negativo, in parte, se richiama solo la logica del profitto e dell’appiattimento dei gusti (dell’omologazione, come diceva Pasolini). M è anche un’occasione formidabile per dare a tutti l’opportunità di accostarsi alla magica, direi quasi mistica esperienza della lettura. E allora ben vengano fiere, festival, conferenze e presentazioni. Bisogna usare le armi del sistema per favorire la crescita della conoscenza. Non c’ altro modo, mi pare.

6. Mi sembra che l’atteggiamento di La Capria, anche se comprensibile, sia un atteggiamento radicalmente radicale, e in questo senso forse, coraggioso. Tuttavia credo che ciò che non ci piace non si supera o si elimina impedendo la diffusione della cultura di massa, ma servendosi di essa per “valorizzare” l’individuo, che è il termine di riferimento di ogni esperienza di lettura. E’ quello che diceva Eco quasi quarant’anni fa, in “Apocalittici e integrati”. Forse, bisognerebbe raccogliere questo suggerimento e la sfida, esistenziale ed epocale, che esso presuppone. Al di là o al di qua di tale misura, c’è l’alternativa, plausibile forse, dell’isolamento dell’intellettuale.

Benedetta Centovalli è responsabile delle collane di narrativa italiana per Rizzoli e di saggistica per Sansoni. Nel 2001 ha varato una collana dedicata alle nuove narrazioni italiane, “Sintonie”, nella quale è uscito nel 2003 il volume di racconti a sua cura Patrie impure. Italia, autoritratto a più voci, che nella forma di antologia-manifesto ne tratteggia intenzioni e percorsi di ricerca, recuperando alla letteratura anche l’aspetto di militanza civile, la nozione di impegno. Si è occupata di studi novecenteschi Sbarbaro, Campo, Merini, Vittorini, Bilenchi e sul critico Baldacci, ha collaborato tra l’altro con “Autografo”, “Strumenti Critici”, “Nuovi Argomenti”, “Il Caffè illustrato”, attualmente tiene una rubrica settimanale su “Stilos”.

1. In fondo non mi disturba affatto che ci siano tanti libri che affollano le nostre librerie se non perché questo eccesso di produzione impedisce ad alcuni libri meritevoli di essere notati, di essere seguiti o accompagnati meglio, di fare la loro strada. E’ quello che è successo l’anno scorso a un romanzo di Andrej Longo, “Adelante”, pubblicato nella collana Sintonie, un libro interessante che poteva avere maggiore attenzione. Comunque se la produzione fosse più contenuta adesso saremo qui a lamentarci del fatto di vivere in un paese poco incline alla creatività. Detto questo l’appello va rivolto ai lettori, nel senso dell’esercizio di una forte selettività e di una minore prevedibilità. Credo anche che debba essere il lettore a orientarsi nell’offerta e non viceversa, allenando la propria capacità di scegliere e il proprio gusto, pensando alla lettura come uno strumento di conoscenza personale e di approfondimento non di esibizione superficiale o di semplice affermazione o appartenenza a mode o stili. Oggi sembra esistere un unico gusto per tutti che condiziona l’offerta e la domanda nello stesso modo. Altro che marketing, sta diventando quasi una questione di fede, di ideologia del consumo

2. Sono naturalmente favorevole, a parte le solite riflessioni sociologiche che possiamo ricavarne. In attesa di esperimenti più coraggiosi come la poesia. Allargano il numero dei lettori? Di questo francamente non sono sicura. Comunque si diffondono pur sempre libri, seppure griffati. Il fatto è che la “biblioteca”, i libri consigliati – una volta prerogativa e caratteristica di un buon editore – oggi è diventata prerogativa dei quotidiani. In questo senso il fenomeno non depone a favore della buona salute dell’editoria italiana, generalista più che di qualità e di progetto, anche quando la qualità finisce per coincidere con la “firma”. Questo spostamento di competenze mi fa pensare a una situazione di crisi, di confusione dei ruoli.

3. Sul presunto gusto dei lettori, nella speranza di essere contraddetti quando le ipotesi sono poco entusiasmanti. Quello che spesso accade è un eccesso di prudenza che può risultare un vero handicap per il libro. D’altronde si devono mettere insieme valutazioni che afferiscono ad ambiti diversi e dunque non omologhe. Nel lavoro intorno a Sintonie cerco di muovermi in modo differente e più autonomo nel giudizio, inseguo un discorso articolato e progettuale, controtendenza, cerco di guadagnare lettori passo passo, libro dietro libro. Ma è molto difficile camminare in modo asimmetrico rispetto al mercato.

4. Piuttosto mi dispiaccio per alcuni buoni libri che ho pubblicato e che non ho saputo o potuto far circolare meglio. Per non essermi battuta abbastanza.

5. Come per i libri in allegato ai quotidiani, sono tante le forme della culturalizzazione nella società contemporanea. Come se un lettore oggi abbia appunto bisogno di essere guidato nella scelta di un libro e di un autore per condividerne il “consumo” con altri consumatori piuttosto che costruire e sviluppare da solo il proprio percorso di conoscenza. Ecco finalmente prevalere anche per i libri il consumatore, se sono prodotti come tali devono essere trattati! Alla lettura si sovrappone la visione, l’incontro, la chiacchiera. Al libro la fisicità dell’autore, il suo charme e l’incarnazione del successo. Il rischio vero è la sempre maggiore omologazione e il disarmo delle idee. Una letteratura di puro finzionariato. La prevedibilità e l’appiattimento su una banale contemporaneità di stampo televisivo o ancora peggio lo snobismo culturale che uccide ogni possibilità di costruire utopie. La cultura nella forma evento produce una specie di anestesia mentale, dà l’illusione della conoscenza mentre è invece priva di realtà, di consistenza. Alla sostanza si è sostituito il contatto, la contiguità, il “giornalismo culturale”.
D’altronde mi piacerebbe poter sposare in pieno le parole di Elena Ferrante: “Io credo che i libri non abbiano alcun bisogno degli autori, una volta che siano stati scritti. Se hanno qualcosa da raccontare, troveranno presto o tardi lettori; se no, no”; ma per farlo dovrei cambiare mestiere.

6. Penso che la buona-cattiva letteratura sia dal punto di vista dell’editore oggi non solo inevitabile ma auspicabile. Se la regola è il mercato e il fatturato non c’è scampo. Non fioriscono anche per questo le scuole di scrittura? Voglio dire che di libri necessari, di letteratura che meriti ancora questo nome, ce ne sono sempre stati pochi e sempre pochi saranno e dunque la macchina editoriale deve continuare a macinare carta per forza dinanimata. Quello che mi preoccupa è la confusione negli addetti ai lavori, la collusione dei mediatori, cioè di coloro che per mestiere dovrebbero distinguere e capire. In questo senso il meccanismo della mediazione culturale è saltato completamente ed è oggi asservito al mercato o al potere. Alla omologazione del gusto rischia di sostituirsi l’assenza di gusto, la medietà come espressione del nulla, del girare a vuoto, della mancanza totale di valori. Non solo culturali ma anche estetici. Il problema non è Stephen King in Italia ma la difficoltà del nostro paese di abitare la modernità e quindi l’accontentarsi di surrogati di qualità scadente, di imitazioni o di contraffazioni. Il ritardo dell’Italia, a rischio di balcanizzazione, non gli consente tuttavia di continuare a coltivare il romanzo-romanzo ma neppure di riuscire a uscirne. A parte qualche eccezione che mi pare indichi la possibilità di rischiare oltre i soliti recinti culturali, penso all’anomalia di Antonio Moresco.

1. No, a mio parere no. La maturità di un mercato si misura dalla capacità di assorbire la produzione più ampia e diversificata. Il problema non è quanti libri, ma quali? Non si risolverebbe comunque il problema dell’aspetto asfittico del nostro mercato con una contrazione del numero di titoli. L’unica strada è l’ampliamento e l’irrobustimento delle strutture imprenditorali dell’editoria e della libreria.

2. E’ la più grande operazioni di marketing nella storia dell’editoria italiana assieme agli Oscar Mondadori. Tra l’altro ha dimostrato l’assoluta infondatezza delle tesi dei guru della new economy che prevedevano un unica grande piazza virtuale, internet, la quale avrebbe funzionato da diffusore della cultura e della lettura, Si è verificato l’opposto. Il più vecchio media di sempre, il libro, venduto nei più vecchi punti vendita, le edicole. E’ un fenomeno con cui l’editoria classica dovrà confrontarsi, senza opporre barriere autarchiche.

3. Ogni libro ha un suo pubblico di partenza. I libri che hanno un pubblico potenziale indifferenziato e pari a infinito sono a mio parere cattivi libri o cattive idee. Nei romanzi la qualità del libro e la sua coerenza con il marchio che lo pubblica sono il primo criterio. E non sempre, per noi la notorietà di un autore è sinomino di maggior vendibilità. Lavoriamo molto sulle scoperte, sulla sorpresa, sull’invenzione. Sul mercato della “varia” è diverso: i libri dei comici, per esempio, sono molto legati al successo in televisione, o alla capacità di un artista di essere entrato nell’immaginario mitico di un certo pubblico.

4. Ci capita a volte di non riuscire a prendere autori che vorremmo pubblicare o di accorgersi in
ritardo della loro bravura.

5. La “classica” presentazione di una volta, con i quattro interventi intorno al tavolo, serve solo ai rapporti dell’autore o della casa editrice. Gli eventi coinvolgono molto più le persone e sono tanto più utili quanto più riescono a imporre se stessi senza la coreografia di un contrno estraneo all’autore o al libro. Il pubblico di queste manifestazioni non è quello della televisione. E’ curioso, attento, sa riconoscere l’imbroglio e non bisogna tradirne le aspettative, che sono autenticamente interessate alla circolazione delle idee, anche se questo passa, per esempio, attraverso il desiderio di vedere da vicino un grande scrittore e potergli chiedere una dedica.

6. Quella descritta da La Capria è l’editoria al tempo di una società di massa: esiste l’alto, il basso, e una terra grigia perfettamente descritta da La Capria. Credo sia un passaggio inevitabile. Ma non vedo capolavori impubblicati per colpa dell’insipienza degli editori.
